Electric motorcycle wheel

Verge Motorcycles has chosen to build the motor of its electric vehicle around

Verge Motorcycles has chosen to build the motor of its electric vehicle around the rim of a wheel, and not to have a centre at all – instead guiding the wheel through rim bearings.

Versions up to 150kW (200hp) are available.

The motorbike has actually been around for a while, but the company has just revealed its latest model, designed and styled with Formula1 driver Mika Häkkinen (pictured), who is also on the company's advisory board.

This is a 102kW version with range up to 350km, according to the company, and can be charged in as little as 35 minutes.

Rear wheel braking is a mixture of regenerative and conventional friction – though an annular-style ‘disc’ brake. The balance between the two is set by the riding mode, of which there are four.

Verge (once RMK Vehicle) is headquartered in Finland and makes its motorcycles in Estonia. (And seems to be wedded to dark photos with black backgrounds….)
