Phoenix police are investigating the death of a 42-year-old man who collided head-on with a vehicle while riding a gas-powered scooter.
Early Wednesday morning, officers responded to a vehicle collision near Cave Creek Road and Cheryl Drive, where they discovered Gary Helton on the ground with "obvious signs of trauma," according to Phoenix police.
At the scene, officers also found a stopped vehicle in the roadway with the driver standing nearby.
According to Phoenix police, Helton died at the scene after his scooter collided head-on with the vehicle. Preliminary information indicates that both Helton and the driver were traveling toward each other in the left-turn-only lane prior to the crash.
Phoenix police stated that detectives determined the driver was impaired. Although the driver was later released, the investigation is ongoing, and a decision regarding charges will be made once it is concluded.
