The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department says one of its own suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash Wednesday morning.

Police said a KCPD motorcycle traffic officer was involved in a crash at East Gregory Boulevard and Troost Avenue around 9:40 a.m.

Sgt. Jonathan Rivers with the KCPD Accident Investigation Unit said the officer was driving northbound on Troost, non-emergency, without lights or sirens, when an SUV turned in front of him.

The officer was unable to stop, and struck the front of the SUV before being thrown from the motorcycle.

He was initially rushed to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

As of noon, the officer's condition was listed as critical, but stable.

Rivers said the owner of a local business saw the crash and jumped into action, pressing the emergency button on the officer's radio which alerted dispatch to the wreck. That intervention, plus the addition of GPS capabilities as part of the officer's radio, meant help could arrive at the scene much quicker.

"Just that citizen coming out, that got us here quicker, and that might potentially be why we have an upgrade in our officer's condition, because of someone coming and helping us," said KCPD Chief Stacey Graves.

Graves stopped short of identifying the officer involved, however, she said he's a tenured officer, and someone who is known and loved within the department.

The driver of the SUV did remain on the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
