A 15-year decorated veteran of the Collegedale Police Department was seriously hurt in a motorcycle accident in western North Carolina over the weekend while of duty and riding with friends.

The accident happened on Sunday on the Cherohala Skyway, one mile inside North Carolina.

Police say the crash involved Hurd's motorcycle and another vehicle pulling a trailer. Hurd was the only one hurt.

The Facebook post says Hurd remained unresponsive as his friends conducted continued life-saving efforts for a total of 45 minutes, before a medical helicopter was able to airlift him to a nearby hospital, where he remains as of Tuesday morning.

This Google Maps embed below shows what the scenic Cherohala Skyway looks like just a mile inside the North Carolina state line, but isn't necessarily the exact place where the crash happened, and terrain likely looks a little different in the wake of Hurricane Helene:

According to a current conditions map on the website of the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Hurd and his friends were nowhere near any road in North Carolina that was adversely affected by Helene.

Police say they'll continue to provide updates on Corporal Hurd's condition as they become available.
